PRESIDENT REED MAKES STRIDES IN STRENGTHENING NEIGHBORHOODS WITH SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE “NEXTDOOR”

July 19, 2013 - St. Louis, MO - President of the Board of Aldermen Lewis Reed announced today that his office will be working to organize neighborhoods virtually, on the online social networking platform Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com). Reed’s team has, to date, registered over a dozen ‘Nextdoor Neighborhoods’ and work is underway to expand the program city-wide.

Nextdoor.com was designed to make community engagement easier for neighborhoods. The site, which is now used by more than 14,000 neighborhoods nationwide, requires users to verify their address and only allows those within the boundaries of the neighborhood and immediately adjacent to view and post updates. Last month New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg entered into a comprehensive partnership with Nextdoor in an effort to strengthen lines of communication with residents, especially in the wake of superstorm Sandy, where real-time information sharing was essential in keeping New Yorkers out of harms way. President Reed has high hopes in Nextdoor’s ability to strengthen St. Louis neighborhoods by increasing resident participation and engaging youth.

“We have an opportunity to build lines of communication between young and old, City Hall and residents and, most importantly, neighbors,” said Reed. “Nextdoor is a logical partner in our efforts to foster community-based solutions through resident-led initiatives.”

Reed’s staff is in communication with California-based program developers, exploring ways to link Nextdoor to city service delivery and policing efforts to create virtual neighborhood watch programs city-wide.

“What we know for sure is this: a connected community is a safer community,” said President Reed.
